Doggo Disappointment

Last week I posted about Matteo, a dog I found at a local rescue that was to come home with us this week. Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned, and we aren’t a good fit for Matteo as he has some issues we found out late in the process. Needless to say I’m quite disappointed.

Kinja'd!!!

After a few visits, and quite a bit of communication over the course of a week, I was all set to sign paperwork on my next visit and bring him home. Then seemingly as an afterthought when everything was planned they shared a 4 page report from a behavior specialist from the University of Penn. First off the rescue had Matteo at 5-6 years old on the website, which admittedly I thought a little off after meeting him, and at last look it shows 4-5. The report says he’s around 10...which may have been written 2 years ago since he’s been there for 2.5 years. He also has arthritis and gastrointestinal issues. These were all disappointing finds but in no way made me change my mind. Unfortunately the biggest issue did, his aggression toward females, he’s bitten two and lunged at another, not sure if those are the only ones or just the listed incidents. I wasn’t told any of this when I mentioned my wife coming to visit. They just recommended I come too since we met already and it would boost his confidence with her. Had I received the report earlier I would have probably never taken my wife to meet and fall for him like I did. Because not only does he pose a high risk to her, most of our visitors are female and our main choices for care while out of town are all female. It’s simply something that wouldn’t work. The risk for an incident is just too high and would be unfair to him should he have one...and of course any potential victim.

The health issues and age would have only changed the plan to adopt based on the immediate and potentially high expense of his care. We simply would have fostered him, which likely would have seen the rest of his days with us and they would have provided his health care. Since he’s never had anything resembling a good doggo life I would have been happy to make the rest of it happy, loving and comfortable. If I were single living alone, he’d probably be here right now.

I really hit it off with him, and am still extremely disappointed in the rescue for the way they handle his case. They are doing him a great disservice which will result in him never finding a home...because for whatever his shortcomings, there is someone out there that has the right conditions for him to thrive.

We did meet this guy last night and there’s a good chance he’s a fit.

Sounds like a shady shelter for witholding that information until right at the end... Private rescue?

It is a private rescue, may be the largest in the area. Along with this experience I’ve since heard a few things that would keep me from going back or recommending them. Everyone there was pleasant and the animals are treated well. But this type of misinformation and withholding of seems to be regular occurrence. I guess the best part is they are a no kill shelter, because some of these poor guys will have long stays.

We like all the animals, but their formula is obvious: get the customer to fall in love with the dog long before revealing pertinent information.

I’m so bummed to hear that. My wife and I went through a similar thing with a rescue withholding information about a dog. That rescue STILL has that dog too. They’ve had him for like 5 years now. I don’t want to ever think that they should put a dog down, but if the dog had lived half his life in a shelter due to some major defect, perhaps its the humane thing to put him down.

Shelter overcrowding is a real thing, and they’re keeping a space for too long. How many other dogs could they have saved?

That sucks. Hopefully they can find someone that would work, because that’s not too exceptional. Sounds like you made the right choice, even if it was tough. We had a similar situation with a “lab shephard mix” that was brindled (so pit or boxer, but whatever), that was in a high kill shelter. First we were getting him, then it didn’t happen in time and he was put down, then a month later hey, hes still alive, want him? By that time, he had been in a shitty shelter for so long he had serious aggression and possession issues. For our first dog, he was beyond our ability to rehab. We sheltered him until a better fit came along, and ended up with our big girl. It worked out for everyone in the end.

Sorry to hear it didn’t work out with the first doggo. The second doggo you mentioned looks like a cutey though! That grin! I have a softspot for the bully breeds after taking home our deaf american bulldog this past summer.
